Melanie’s Story

Site created on January 19, 2018

After years of  living with chronic migraine, fibromyalgia,  anxiety and depression, doctors discovered two different types of brain tumor- a pituitary micro adenoma and Oligodendroglioma. I underwent surgery to remove the glioma February 2018, followed by a one month stay in the hospital to regain use of my paralyzed left side. Upon discharge in March 2018, I began 30 radiation treatments over 6 weeks followed by a full year of chemotherapy.

Here’s my thoughts on #worldcancerday
Living with cancer is tough. Life after treatment is incredibly difficult and confusing. You expect to go back to your old life to find it’s not there. You are different; your body is different; life is different. Chemo side effects don’t simply disappear because your are finished ingesting poison.
Every ache, pain, bump, and wave of nausea causes uncontrollable anxiety and thoughts of “what if it’s back?”

The only thing I can do is slowly put one foot in front of the other and keep moving.

Today I want to thank First Descents for showing me that I can still be #outlivingit, and for allowing me the opportunity to meet so many fantastic people. Thank you to Gildas Club KC for providing my family with support and community. Thank you to  Camp Kesem for the love & friendship you give my kiddo. Thank you to @thecancerpatient on IG for the laughs, community, and new friends. Thank you to the friends, neighbors, ohana, and family who continue to support our family. It’s a difficult road, but sharing it with amazing people makes it easier.

If you feel inclined to help these organizations, I’ve included links below where you can make donations or get involved.
