Journal

It is day 213 and exactly one year ago today we got the devistating news that Mike was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) it was very aggressive and the only cure was a bone marrow transplant. We didn’t have a lot of time to get things started.  After 3 months of extensive chemo he was ready for transplant they had found a match, but as we approached the time for transplant the donor fell through. It only took a few more weeks to find another. We were very grateful he was set for transplant. He was admitted to the University of Washington in September 24th and again very high dose of chemo up until October 2nd which was the day of transplant. We knew he would be have to stay close to the hospital for at least 100 days. So 3 weeks after transplant Mike was doing really well, he was walking miles and Mikes around the 7th floor. They let him out in October 27 and he stayed close by at a friends house. After about 3 days he started getting symptoms of GVHD. ( his body was trying to reject the donors marrow.) A few days later he ended up back in the hospital. They were having a hard time getting the symptoms under control.  Then ilin November 18 he was having very severe abdominal pain. They rushed him to surgery where they found he had an abdominal perforation.  They tried to patch best they could, but because of a high dose of steroids it was preventing healing. They weren’t really sure what caused the perforation could have been all the medications. He was in the hospital until February 17 he finally got to leave, we still needed to stay close so we stayed at Mikes friend Shelby’s. He still had the perforation, but he was getting stronger. Finally around the 3 rd of April he came home. He is still healing and getting much stronger.  This past Monday they went in to try to patch the hole again, we will find out more after the 18th to see if he will finally begin to eat again. He is doing amazing getting around very well. We wanted to thank everyone who had been there for us this past year and for all the prayers. We love and appreciate you all.
Mike and Tracy
