George’s Story

Site created on February 1, 2019

Hey all, thanks for checking in to the site.

As you almost certainly know, George was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the fall, has been through chemo and radiation (he did great!) and is now scheduled for surgery on February 7 to remove about 7 inches of esophagus and tie it into his stomach. He'll be in the hospital for about 7 days, and then we expect a month (or two...) of recovery.

It feels weird, honestly, putting this out there, but the support we've received so far in this journey has been so amazing and so many people have asked to be updated and involved that this seems like it might be a good way to put everything under one umbrella. I honestly can't say what more we might need; we've really done OK so far and feel really lucky about that, but just in case....

Journal entry by Julie Lucey

The next step is here! George is out of the ICU and into the regular care (less nurses to a patient) part of the hospital, St. Elizabeth room 7550. Many of the tubes are out, but enough still in that he can’t move around on his own—but he claims to be mobile. They started the tube feeding tonight and will do a barium test in the morning that will determine whether he can have fluids by mouth. He hopes to be home in 2-3 days. Progress!
