Gay moved to Deephaven Woods with Roger in June 2015. Roger passed in Oct 2017, Gay continued to live in their beautiful apartment which looks out on a stand of trees, just like their house in Chanhassen. She loves watching the birds at the feeder, talking about cats, going on walks, sitting on Deephaven's porch or sitting by the fireplace during the afternoon social. Also...puzzles...lots of puzzles. The ones the community works on together in the library or the one she has going in her room.
Gay's health has been remarkably stable for many years. Even navigating the lockdown during the pandemic, when asked, "how are you?' she would say, "hanging in". The past few months, however, the response changed. When asked How are you, she would say, "feeling tired" or "not too lively". Also, her appetite decreased dramatically and she went down many clothing sizes. Being one month away from her 89th birthday, we took it in stride.
But on December 9 we got the news that she had tested positive for Covid. Her symptoms were mild. However, adding fatigue onto someone who is already tired; breathing issues onto someone who has pre-existing lung concerns; zero appetite onto someone who is underweight...has taken its toll. There was a trip to the ER on Dec 13. This helped Gay clarify that she had no interest in going back to the hospital. On Dec 17th we enacted Hospice.
