Gavin was discharged home yesterday afternoon. He is still on a pretty heavy regimen of pain medication, but is managing well at home. He's happy to be back with his little brother again and even enjoyed a visit from a friend today. It's amazing what being home and being around those you love can do for the soul.
Gavin will continue to recover at home until next Thursday, when he'll return to Mayo Clinic Rochester for a lumbar puncture (LP) procedure. Based on the results of his LP, along with the final pathology results, Gavin's neuro oncologist will finalize his treatment plan. Best case scenario, Gavin’s LP will come back with normalized tumor marker levels and if so, the plan is to finish his 4 remaining chemo cycles and then move on to radiation. If his LP comes back with elevated tumor marker levels, Gavin’s treatment plan will be more intensive. We don't have a lot of details regarding what intensive treatment might look like, and have decided to reserve those questions until we know if/when we need to cross that bridge.
Thank you for your continued prayers and well wishes. Gavin came home to a bundle of get well cards, which lifted his spirits. Oliver also received some positive vibes in the mail, which was just the boost he needed. It's easy to forget about Oliver in all of this. He is scared, and hurts deeply when Gavin is gone. He gets shuffled here and there, often with little to no notice. Though we are so blessed to have supportive family and friends who help us with whatever whenever, Oliver sometimes struggles when we're gone and at times has difficulties sleeping, is quick to tears, and can get anxious. Thank you for supporting Oliver through this as well. He is Gavin's BIGGEST fan, and is hands down the BEST brother on this planet.
We pray continuously that Gavin's LP results will be favorable. Thanks for praying with us - you prayer warriors are amazing!
