Gary’s Story

Site created on October 4, 2019

On July 31, while we were vacationing in the Smokies, Gary felt discomfort in his back. Throughout August, his pain traveled from one spot to another, getting better, then changing, getting worse...by September, he had some discomfort in his chest. On Monday, September 16, we went to Genesis East Emergency Room, where he was diagnosed with cancer, Multiple Myeloma.

By Friday, September 20, we were at Mayo Clinic. We met with Dr. Siddiqui, who questioned the diagnosis, as the labs didn't add up. After many, many tests, scans, biopsies, etc., we just found out, it is not Multiple Myeloma. However, we still do not have a final diagnosis of what it is. This has been a very sneaky cancer, literally no warning signs prior to July 31. And now it appears to be an aggressive cancer, affecting Gary's ability to walk, as he has debilitating pain throughout his body.

Currently, Gary is in Methodist Hospital at Mayo. They admitted him on Monday, September 30, to get his pain under control, as well as continue to figure out what type of cancer it is.

As all of you probably know, Gary is a pretty private person, not comfortable being the center of attention. Creating this journal, and letting people in, is difficult for him to accept. But we can use all the positive energy, loving thoughts and prayers that you can give. He is well-loved by many, and that will comfort him during these difficult times.

I'm just putting this out to the universe - there will be a luncheon after the service on Monday. Growing up in Lost Nation, folks always handled the funeral luncheons in a Potluck sort of way. So, I would like to do that. We'll have the main dish and fixin's, but if any of you would like to add to the menu with a salad or chips or dessert, that would be wonderful. No worries if it doesn't work for you!
Thanks.
