Hi family and friends,

It was an incredibly busy week for Dad and Mom at Mayo. Dad underwent a series of tests on his internal organs, all of which went smoothly! He has been cleared for stem cell treatment, with just two additional tests scheduled for this week: a PET scan and a liver ultrasound to help finalize his treatment plan for transplant. The stem cell donor in Europe is also undergoing additional testing to ensure the best compatibility. An additional donor is on stand by, if needed.

The physicians determined that Dad's donor cells need to be "fresh" due to his age and cancer mutations. This means a Mayo courier will fly to Europe to collect the fresh stem cells from the donor and bring them directly back to Mayo, where Dad will be waiting for the transplant. Mom and Dad also met with their care coordinator and nurse to learn more about the chemotherapy "conditioning" and stem cell transplant process. This was an informative process and they learned many things they will need to do to help ensure Dad remains as healthy as possible post-transplant.

Due to the additional testing, the conditioning and stem cell transplant have been postponed. Originally scheduled to begin this week, but now it is looking more like 2-3 weeks until the conditioning starts. After a busy few week at Mayo, this delay might be a blessing, allowing Mom and Dad to rest before the next phase of this process.

We have arranged for Mom and Dad to stay at the Hyatt House through a wonderful organization called Home4Healing. They toured the Hyatt House and found it to be a great fit for their needs. It is an extended stay hotel suite very near the hospital. They are required to remain near Mayo for an extended period, spanning the conditioning, transplant, and post-care phases.

This weekend, the 4 J's (Jen, Jeff, Julia, & Jessica) spent a lovely time in New Prague with Mom and Dad. We helped prepare for their upcoming rummage sale, enjoyed each other's company, played games, ate a lot, and discussed important matters. It was a true blessing for us all to gather, especially considering that three of their children live out of state.

A stem cell transplant is the only cure for Dad's Myelofibrosis. It's an invasive process that will require ongoing monitoring. Dad maintains a positive mindset, often saying he is "strong like a bull." This attitude is crucial, and he's fortunate to have the unwavering support of his wife, family, and friends. Dad continues to take an oral medication to manage his blood cancer symptoms. Unfortunately, these drugs are no longer as effective as they once were, underscoring the urgency of the transplant.

We will keep everyone updated on Dad's return to Mayo for chemo (conditioning) and, eventually, the transplant. If all continues to progress well, this is expected to happen within the next 2-3 weeks. Please continue to keep Dad and Mom in your prayers, both for their physical and mental well-being. Your thoughts, support, and prayers truly make a difference!
