Gary’s Story

Welcome to Gary's CaringBridge website. I'm Janette his partner, and I'm maintaining the site on Gary's behalf. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

For those that are just joining us here is some background.

In August of 2017, after testing to explain Gary’s chronic cough, a tumour was found on his right kidney. His kidney was removed. The tumour was confirmed to be Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC)—kidney cancer.

His medical team’s initial assessment was that the cancer had not spread outside of the kidney, and Gary was placed on surveillance and sent for further testing.

In December 2017 PET scans confirmed that the cancer had spread to Gary’s lung, and several lymph nodes throughout his body.

After consultation with his medical team they determined that with the current location and size of the affected areas surgery and radiation therapy were not an option. So, in January 2018 Gary started undergoing a type of chemo therapy called targeted drug therapy with an oral drug called Sutent known to have positive results with preventing and decreasing the spread of kidney cancer. Gary was on Sutent up until December 2018.

The drug therapy has quite a range of serious side effects and Gary experienced many of them over the year. He managed the side effects as best he could while enjoying life closer to home, riding his bike, and maintaining his administrative work with SKILS and Ocean River Sports.

In December, despite an increased dosage, the Sutent drug was no longer effectively holding off the growth and spread of the cancer. It had also become increasingly difficult for Gary to tolerate.

So in January of 2019 Gary was switched to a new two drug combination immunotherapy treatment.  This treatment too has serious effects many of which Gary has been experiencing. The recent assessment of his immunotherapy treatment did not show show the results hoped for, and Gary’s condition has become more challenging this last while both as reaction to the spread of the cancer and the immunotherapy treatment. His medical team has currently suspended the treatment, and he has been put on a high dose regime of steroids for the next six weeks to hopefully combat the inflammatory situation presented by the cancer and the immunotherapy.

Along with tending to his health Gary has been enjoying the company of friends and colleagues and enthusiastically watching as the Leafs head into the playoffs!

Our bodies are remarkably good at hiding this disease’s symptoms, and as a result people with kidney cancer often have advanced cases by the time it is discovered.   Medical experts don’t know the exact cause of kidney cancer. Gary did not have any of the risk factors associated with this type of cancer, but it is most commonly found in men between the ages of 50 and 70. It is the seventh most common cancer in men.

Journal entry by Janette Galan

Gary Patrick Doran, 60, died peacefully at home on Thursday May 23, 2019 in James Bay, Victoria, British Columbia, after a two-year struggle with cancer. From his birth in Ottawa on July 23, 1958, to his death on Thursday, Gary was a gallant soul whose kindness, generosity, and authenticity were apparent to everyone he came in contact with.

Gary grew up in Mississauga and was the youngest of three children. He spent his childhood adventuring outdoors, fostering a love and respect for the natural world that he carried throughout his life.

After graduating from high school, Gary earned a BSc. in Biology and Environmental Science from Trent University. While there, Gary’s love and talent for music led him to create and perform in bands, including his punk band Scratch—acquiring some notoriety and popularity touring the college performance circuit. He then earned a teaching degree from Laurentian University College and a Certificate in Courseware Design and Production from Sheridan College. Gary enjoyed a short successful career in instructional design before his passion for the outdoors brought him to British Columbia.

In 1996 Gary landed in Victoria where he became an exceptionally skilled professional sea kayak instructor and guide trainer, a career he’s enjoyed for more than 20 years. Held in high regard by colleagues and students across the country, Gary was honoured in 2019 by the Sea Kayak Guide Alliance of BC with a Lifetime Membership Award for his outstanding service and commitment to the professional sea kayaking industry. He also had the distinction of receiving the inaugural Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Lifetime Contribution Award, which recognized his long-standing efforts to enrich and strengthen sea kayaking. Gary’s committed approach to sea kayaking also helped shape the Pacific Paddling Symposium, now in its 7th year, into one of Canada’s showcase sea kayaking events, drawing students and instructors from around the world.

Physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle were an integral part of Gary’s life and he was often seen around town with his “green drinks." He had a natural athletic grace and enjoyed playing many sports throughout his life including hockey, tennis, and badminton. His dedication to sport led him to be an active member in his community, volunteering at the Downtown Victoria YMCA. For over 15 years, he coordinated Monday night badminton, where he helped create a welcoming place for all players while embodying the very best of sportsmanship.

Left to remember Gary is his loving partner of 16 years, Janette Galan, parents Fred and Maureen (Hardy) Doran, his brothers Ken and Wayne (Terri) Doran, nieces Ashley Kamberbeek and Danna Doran, and grandnieces Reese and Cassidy, many friends and kayaking community,

Details on a celebration of life for Gary will be shared at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gary’s name for Kidney Cancer Canada
