Journal entry by Kate Cooper —
Gabriel spent one short week on CPAP before he graduated to High Flow on 2/22! He started at 5L of oxygen and we were told at 1L of oxygen he would be able to go home. The weaning process started at 0.5L every 3 days or so. Once we got down to 4L, and one of our favorite attending came back on service, we began weaning every day! On Friday I was told I could finally start trying non-nutritive breastfeeding (I would pump to empty then allow him to latch). The next day he got the hang of it and began nursing, for very short periods of time. We are now down to 2L of oxygen - just 1L to go before we’re home. He’s taking an extra day or so between weans because it is getting a little harder with less support. But we could still be looking at the end of this week or beginning of next week till we’re finally home! He is also allowed a longer period of time to nurse (5 min per feed) and we can integrate some bottle feeding as well with our occupational therapist.
Gabriel is here because of your prayers, because we have remained so diligent in our faith, and we have trusted God every step of the way. He is a miracle! He is proof of the power of prayer! 🤍
