Everleigh’s Story

Site created on October 24, 2022

Welcome to our CaringBridge website for our sweet baby girl, Everleigh Emerson. We are using this as a way to keep family and friends updated in one place. Not that we don’t love hearing from you, because we definitely do and don’t want that to stop! This is just a way that we have decided will be best to give updates and make sure everyone knows all that we know! :) We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement and especially your prayers for our little ‘ass kicker’! We are also thankful for all of you that have blessed us in our lives. There’s also a GoFundMe link (https://gofund.me/2727ac1a) connected to this site to help with medical bills if anyone is interested in something like that.

Everleigh Emerson Keffeler was born on 10•22•22 at 9:51am. She weighed 8# 9oz and 21 inches long. She has her long fingers wrapped around both her mom and dad’s fingers already!

Everleigh and mom had a long labor waiting for her to finally come out and bless this world. Mom and dad went in on Thursday, October 20th for an induction around 4 o’clock that afternoon. (Why did we choose to do an induction at 39 weeks? Because mom had Covid back at the end of July and our doctors recommended that we do an induction at 39 weeks because with earlier Covid cases there were more complications with late term pregnancy and Covid. We chose to go through with the 39 week induction.)

Once mom and dad were settled into their room on the 20th, contractions began around 8pm that night. Throughout Thursday night and into Friday morning the nurses would come in and check on mom every now and then. By Friday morning, things weren’t really progressing too quickly, but they also weren’t going in the opposite direction. It was around 1:30pm on Friday that they began the Pitocin, or Oxytocin.

Around 4:30pm, mom was still having steady contractions, but not dilating as much as our doctor would like, so our doctor decided it was time to break mom’s water and place an epidural. The rest of that afternoon contractions were steady and mom had dilated to about a 3 within an hour of starting the Pitocin.

It was around 11:00pm that our doctor came into our room and said that contractions have somewhat subsided or become inconsistent/nonexistent at times. At this point mom was on 20 units of Pitocin/minute. Our doctor had explained to us that if there is no improvement by the time we were at 30 units/minute, then we would have to do a C-section for the safely of mom and Everleigh. Our doctor was willing to give Everleigh a chance though and work her way down to avoid a C-section.

Throughout Friday night and into Saturday morning they were trying different laying positions of how to make it easier for Everleigh to work her way down and keep progressing. Finally at 5:00am, we had reached a 6 and Everleigh had made her way lower, progress!

Our nurse and doctor came in around 8:00-8:30am on Saturday morning to check mom. Our doctor mentioned that Everleigh was face up and that we would start pushing and trying different ways to turn her. Mom - not really understanding what was happening - asked, “Sooo, am I at a 7 now… or at least a 6.5?” To everyone’s surprise she responded, “No… you are at a 10 now!” (Thank goodness, hallelujah!)

At about 8:50am, we began pushing, and at 9:51am and after about 18 hours of active labor, sweet Everleigh Emerson entered our world making us officially Mom and Dad! 🤍

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kaitlyn Keffeler

In a blink of an eye Everleigh has turned 4 months somehow! Within the last 4 months a lot has changed, and she has been growing like a weed! She is smiling and giggling, especially at her ceiling fans. Ev loves to stand up, with us helping obviously, and refuses to sit. We like to say that she would rather be a 4x6 board than sit and have pressure on her big ole belly. We haven't seen any seizure-like activity since leaving the hospital luckily!

Recently, we have had a few appointments for Everleigh. On February 23rd, she had her 4 month well check-up at Black Hills Pediatrician. She has continued to have a high heart rate, like she has from the beginning. Our pediatrician has checked at all her well check-ups and it has continued to stay around the 170-180bpm. She informed us that it usually lowers by this point, but Everleigh's hasn't. Just to be precautious, she spoke to one of the cardiologist at the clinic and they agreed with her about doing an EKG. They sent off the EKG to be read by a heart hospital in Omaha. Yesterday, March 2nd, we received a call back from BH Ped's saying that there was a slight abnormality on the right side that they would like to have checked out. We have an echocardiogram scheduled for March 16th.

On March 2nd, Everleigh had her recheck EEG sleep study completed. For this study, we had to keep her sleep deprived, and she was awake from 11am to about 2pm. When you have a sleep deprived baby and probes being put all over your head, you get a very grumpy baby! Luckily, she was able to take an hour nap while being monitored, but was woken up for her awake portion. She had to look at a bright strobe light for what seemed like forever, but was finally done with her EEG. On March 3rd, we received a call from the Neurologist office. They informed us that he went over the test report and everything came back normal!🙌 The neurologist would like to do another EEG in 6 months. He would also like to keep her at the dose of Phenobarbital she's been on since about 2 months. We may be upping that again at our follow-up with the neurologist on March 13th depending on her weight.

As of right now, we continue to do what we have been doing and take this all day by day. We have a beautiful girl who continues to show us how strong she is! Her doctors and pediatricians continue to give us the best care she needs and help us in any way they can. We will update you all once we have more! Thank you all for your continued prayers and God bless!
