Ethan’s Story

Site created on April 21, 2023

Welcome to Ethan's page. Ethan is a 15-year-old young man from Council Grove, Kansas. Ethan is the oldest of 3 and is the son of Amy and Terry Lif. Terry is a Council Grove Police Officer and Amy works part-time for the Council Grove Recreation Dept.

Ethan was having some pain in his leg during this baseball season, so they went to see a sports medicine provider on 4/11/23 thinking he might have torn his ACL. During his MRI, they saw shadowing and referred him to KU Med. He met with Dr. Sweeney on 4/12/23 and was scheduled for a biopsy on 4/14/23. The devastating results of the biopsy came on 4/19/23 and Ethan was diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

Ethan will begin a very aggressive chemotherapy treatment plan on 5/3, the day before his 16th birthday. He currently has over 20 hospital admissions scheduled over the new few months. Ethan's care should be the only thing that Terry and Amy are worried about and we have created a go fund me account for those who would like to give. We also know that several local fundraisers are happening and we want a centralized place to keep all information.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Amy Honer

Wednesday, April 26th E update-

We knew today would be a BIG day, test wise. We got to Children's Mercy by 7:30am. The first thing on the agenda was the PET scan. This was to check for any other tumors in his body, since it can travel through the bones... they gave him a dye injection for the scan, waited 45 minutes to get it in his system good... the PET scan then took a little over an hour... followed by a different injection of dye for the chest scan (osteosarcoma tends to move to the lungs if/when it travels)... followed THEN by the MRI of his full femur.

Next was the Oncologist appointment at 2:30 to discuss results. Our doc came in and told us he has "mostly GREAT news" for us, after looking at all of Ethan's bloodwork and scans. He proceeded to show us Ethans PET scan... his left knee area (lower femur) was glowing which we knew it would because that is where the cancer is. But here is the great news the doctor was referring to... it wasn't glowing anywhere else!!! I could FEEL the relief in myself, Terry, and most importantly Ethan.

Jump to the down part of that 'mostly' comment... The doctor did notice a small "spec" (4mm in size) that showed up on the chest scan in his lung. He said that he would be speaking personally with a surgeon and radiologist in that area of expertise on whether or not they want to go in and try to find that little 4mm spec to remove or see what chemo does with it. He did mention this little spec wasn't necessarily round like tumors tend to be, and said there was a chance it could be a scar tissue or something along those lines, but couldn't say for certain as of right now.

We will take today as a huge WIN because, in Ethan's words, "I'm just glad it didn't light up like a Christmas tree." 🫣🤦🏼‍♀️ I can not tell you how incredibly loved by all of you, that he is feeling!! Truly. He NEEDED this news today. He has HOPE. He said on the way back home, " I'm just ready to get this started already."

I have never in my life seen someone so strong. He has a hard road ahead, and he's aware of what will come, but he is ready.

We go back to KC Friday at 10am to get his staples out... then again next Monday or Tuesday for an echocardiogram to get a base line for his heart prior to chemo starting.

Next Wednesday we go first thing to KC for his port placement and first (of many) high dose of chemo.

He. Is. Ready. 💪🏻

The pic is from when they had just taken Ethan to the room next door, we had just heard the big machine load up and turn on and all we could do was pray, knowing it was now in God's hands.
