Ethan’s Story

Site created on December 6, 2023

On November 1st, 2023 we got news that no parent expects to hear, that your child has cancer. Ethan had called me (Jessica) on Oct 31st letting me know that he was not doing good. I had asked him what was wrong and and had said he had a headache for 3 weeks and his ribs hurt really bad. I had asked if he fell out of his dorm bed, and he said he didn't remember waking up on the floor! I told him to go to urgent care in Menomonie where he was at college. He went the next day and they took an x-ray and drew blood. When the results came back he called to tell me they were sending him to the ER.  Asking why, he said they found something in his lungs and his blood. I and Bob (who's working in Duluth) rushed to the ER. When he got to the ER they did a CT scan and ultrasound. When the doctor returned with results to let us know what was going on with Ethan,  She told us that he had either Hodgkin's or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It's cancer of your lymphatic system, the system that keeps you healthy.

Millions of worries 😟
Thousands of pills taken💊
70+ Days in the hospital 🏥
30+ blood and platelets transfusions 🩸
6 rounds of intense chemotherapy
Well folks that's a wrap.....

Ethan finished his last dose of chemotherapy yesterday at 4pm and we were heading home at 6pm!  No better feeling of knowing he is done with his treatments.

We received his results back from pathology, although it looked like dead cancer cell in the lymph they want to be extra sure this never comes back. So Ethan will have to take an oral chemo pill for the next 6 months.

Looking ahead 👀
The next two weeks are typically the worst of his treatment. So for now we can't say he will not be back in the hospital until we get thur these 2 weeks.

In the next 3-4 weeks when his counts recover he will have another surgery to remove his port from his chest.  Ethan does not like to touch or feel his port so this is one thing he is really happy about!

He will periodically have CT scan to make sure nothing rears it's ugly head.   Because he will be taking that oral chemo pills he will have  monthly doctor appointments.

Ethan is looking forward to going back to work, being with friends, starting school and not being being poked with needles all the time!
