Journal entry by Morgan Miransky

Welcome, and thank you for visiting this site about my mom, Esta Miran. Many people have been asking about her, and her condition. Here is where we are:

This part of her story started in February of this year. During a screening for one of her cancer mutations, a recurrent tumor was found in the back of her right thigh. By the time she had surgery at the end of April, the tumor had grown to about 20cm in size. Since the tumor was localized and the surgeon took clean margins, we expected this would be the end of it. As had been done several times before.

Unfortunately, her surgical site did not heal. She has been draining fluid from the site ever since. Within 8 weeks of her surgery, she had new tumors in the same location. One of them was almost as big as the tumor that had been removed.

By June 2021, due the location of the new tumor, the original incision not healing, and the concern about how well she would tolerate the first surgery, it was decided that a second surgery was not possible. Options for radiation and chemotherapy began being explored.

Her family and friends came to visit. On July 12th, she chose to enter hospice because of how difficult a simulation for radiation was, and she did not want to spend the remaining time she had left in pain and misery because of the treatment she was scheduled to receive. She was enrolled in hospice on July 14th.

Since then, she has been treated with care and compassion. Her pain has been well managed. She has fulfilled her dream to move to St. Louis to be with me and her grandchildren.

Her experience with cancer is coming to an end, and we are doing everything to make her as happy and comfortable as we can.
