Ernie’s Story

Site created on March 27, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website for Ernie Polutnik. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On Saturday, March 23rd, (after having Influenza A & B for about a month) Ernie was rushed to the hospital after Annette discovered he was unable to move. Upon being admitted, he was initially diagnosed with Sepsis. Further tests revealed that he also had two different kinds of strokes. Ischemic (which has two types in itself), Thrombotic and Embolic. Dad had an Embolic.  This was caused when a wandering clot that was formed on his heart was carried through the bloodstream and landed in his brain. The other is an Intracerebral Hemorrhage which occurs when a blood vessel bleeds or ruptures into the tissue deep within the brain. Extremely rare to have both at the same time. The issue is that one requires a thinner and the other requires a thickner to treat. And on top of all that, he still has Sepsis and his mitral valve has 3.25 cm of vegetation (bacteria).

Journal entry by Michael Polutnik

Ernie will be going home tomorrow .... day 77. We have been busy getting the bathroom and house accessible for him. Sandie has been putting in countless hours in the yard so he can enjoy some time outside. We are all beyond excited to have him home. Dad is still doing dialysis, but we are hoping his levels will keep on going down and that his kidney issues were just "conditional" and no permanent dialysis will be needed. Thank you to everyone who has come by, sent cards, and well wishes/prayers. It is absolutely incredible how far he has come. My Mom used to talk about how she would never get across the river to the other side of town. Well ... she is more than ready to not be crossing the river and is looking forward to staying home with Dad. Much love to all of you for going on this crazy journey with us. - Michael
