Journal

I wanted to set aside some time (as Erik takes a much needed nap) to catch everyone up.  I want to first apologize for leaving many in the dark this past week.  It was a whirlwind of challenging adjustments and thankful joy all at the same time.  At 10:15 at night on Tuesday, May 11th,  Erik and I finally came back TOGETHER from Yale.  We were welcomed by a yard full of pink flamingos (one for each day he was in hospital) and three excited teens!  God was at work four years ago when Erik took his position with Bartlett in CT for the primary reason of me being at home with our boys- now he gets to reap the benefits of that leading.  Not many can do all their rehabilitation in the comforts of their own home, administered by people who truly love them no matter what.
We met with home PT on Thursday and are awaiting the much needed OT appointment.  Right now despite all the broken/fractured bones and other internal injuries, his most painful and frustrating part of the recovery has been the nerve damage that runs from his right hand fingertips all the way to just above his elbow.  Almost every part of his left arm was broken or fractured, but the surgery he received in the hospital pinned and plated everything back into place and he actually has fair mobility now in that arm.
His healthy legs have been a huge asset to him here at home.  He can actually take short “walks” inside and has been able to conquer some of the many sets of stairs in our old house.  He still is using our motorized recliner to sleep and sit during the day because getting up from a flat position is a task he and I can not yet complete together.
Riding in the car is a very painful experience and we were trying to keep his exposure to public spaces at a minimum because until this morning he had not received his second COViD vaccine.  However, the beautiful weather this week made for some perfect opportunities for Erik to get some healthy sunshine and fresh air for the first time in several weeks.
His nerve damage has made it hard for him to type, but he is working with me on his first CaringBridge post... please stay tuned!  Today we were shocked once again at the extent of Gods love being poured out on us.  I went outside to see who had pulled into our driveway to find a dear coworker of Eriks from his York, PA office.  She had driven 5 hours the night before, stayed in a hotel and then came over to drop off a car load of groceries and gifts collected  from all his previous coworkers!  This is just one example of so many.  We can not even begin to thank all those who have blessed us throughout this whole journey!

Please continue to pray for Gods patience and perseverance because now Eriks recovery is something we will all live out daily together.  Pray that Erik can take the time to allow his body to properly heal before trying to jump back into all the areas where he was so instrumental in leading people.  Pray that when our family is finally on the other side of this we can properly thank each and everyone of you in person!
