Journal entry by Emily Dawson

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I should have seen this coming! Unfortunately the surgery is not going to happen.  I don’t know what is scarier, having open heart surgery or not having it. I had several tests done this week including labs, echo, ekg, lung scan, and right heart cath. After these results, it was determined my heart was not strong enough to handle the surgery and the location of the scarring in my arteries are too far out into the lungs that it is not worth the risk. I have significant pulmonary hypertension and the beginnings of right heart failure. This is wild because I don’t feel as bad as all of this sounds, but I found out that was typical as I’ve been slowly building up these symptoms over time and became accustomed to them.

This is definitely very upsetting and shocking. The surgery was a cure and I would have returned to normal. I couldn’t wait for the amazing feeling everyone talked about after surgery. We have been waiting for this day for over 6 months. Now the plan is to return home to my specialist and figure out a more aggressive treatment plan with medication.  Thanks for all of your prayers and well wishes 🙏🏼
