Journal

Well, sometimes you just don't know whether to laugh or cry.

We are home.  Not only are we home, but also so many things are better! Emme can talk and eat and walk . . . all things we weren't sure would ever happen again.  (She was even doing so well that the insurance decided not to let us stay in Atlanta for a needed hand and arm surgery.)  Emme is reunited with Gwen, her cat.  She has a dear friend coming to visit her this weekend. There are moments of great joy!

We are home, but some things just aren't better.  Emme still can't use her hands; she still has double vision; she still has this autoimmune disease/brain injury causing her hands and arms to contract throughout the day and night.

Sometimes we don't know whether to laugh or cry.  Just for fun, I will give you a glimpse of our lives from this morning.  I helped Emme get ready to go to Trevecca with me so I could teach my classes.  We can't leave her alone at the house, so she goes with me every day.  A few minutes before we would have left, Emme stood up, passed out,  fell, and hit her head on a wall.   There is no doctor we know in Nashville who understands her condition enough to be someone we could call in those moments.  Meanwhile, Jon was having car trouble and was stranded on Mount Juliet Road for three hours waiting for a tow truck.  When he heard what had happened, he jogged all the way home to help.  Emme is ok, but the car isn't.  They just called to say that Jon's car needs a new transmission to the tune of $9000.  I didn't get to my classes . . . again.  And now we are car hunting.  I am laughing to keep from crying.

In the midst of all the chaos, I remember that God has been faithful to us each step of the way.  Thank you to all of you who have been part of God's faithfulness to us during these three months since November 8, when we got that first text from Emme.

Here are some specific prayer requests today:

1.  We need to secure a hand and arm surgeon in Nashville to do this needed surgery for Emme that might give her some pain relief.  The first surgeon we went to see quickly admitted that Emme's case was out of his league.

2.  We need a car -- a miracle car.  We had planned to drive Jon's car for many years still.

3.  We have applied for Choices, a Tennessee program that will provide home health care and some respite care for us.  We need that to work out yesterday.

4.  We are combining households, which, though fun, is also stressful.  Lots of boxes sitting around.  Selling furnishings to make way for hospital equipment.  Looking for new furnishings.  Setting up Emme's room.  Changing all the doorknobs in the house so that she can open them, etc.  Picture me trying to paint a room with a broken elbow and torn ligament, and you will know how ridiculous this is.

5.  We are waiting for medical help in many areas.  We can't see the neuro eye specialist or begin treatment until April.  We still need to wait three weeks to see the neurologist, etc.

Thanks for being part of our team!  It makes a difference knowing we are not alone.

Kathy

If you wish to give to Emme's continued health needs, go to

https://gofund.me/a5fee4f7

Please be aware that when the Caringbridge site asks for a donation, that donation goes to CaringBridge to support this website.  It does not go to Emme or to the Mowry family.   This is true for the "tribute" donations that you make here.  If you wish your funds to go to Emme's support, use the GoFundMe link above.

Your donations have already helped with paying uncovered medical expenses, buying hospital equipment for our home, and so many other needs.  Thank you!
