Journal

February 4th.  1975 to 2020.  45 years.  Oh, how Emily loved her birthday. I'm not sure I know anyone who enjoyed celebrating her birthday more than Emily.  The first birthday that I knew her, she convinced me and the librarians to go tubing at one of the local ski resorts.  I don't remember the temperature, but I am sure it was really cold.  What a time we had as we laughed and tubed and hurt ourselves.  Was anyone else even there other than us?  I don't think so.

I wish I'd chronicled other celebrations she threw for herself, like the epic party when she turned 40. She so loved Johnny Depp that the she threw an Edward Scissorhands party, complete with specialty cocktails - like the "five finger discount" with tiny security devices in them.  And of course, she found an ice sculptor who carved a statue of Winona Ryder for the party.  The sculptor was none other than the son of the man who made the sculpture for the movie.  How Emily happened across this guy is just one for the books - but the universe wanted it that way, as it added to her life of stories.  And Emily was destined for good stories.  After all, her life started with one, when her mother, Karin, just walked out of the hospital with Emily without so much as a goodbye or thank you, let alone paying a bill!

Thank you all for the nice wishes the last few days. A group of Emily's friends was able to get together this past weekend for dinner to celebrate Emily and share some stories.  It warms my hear to keep those stories alive.  Emily spent the last few birthdays a little more subdued with our family.  Here's one close to her birthday. She was sooo proud to be a mama.  Her heart was full, and I am sure she would be happy to know that you all are thinking about her on her birthday.

Best,
Rob
