Newest Update

Journal entry by Joan Nelson

We came to the  emergency room on March 19th and are getting discharged April 1st. Only 14 days, not 39 like his hospitalization after the accident September 2022. But we are tired, and it feels frustrating to be in this situation again. I am not excited to be his nurse, and Eli isn't happy to be the patient.

Eli is coming  home today with a wound vac covering 2 of his 3 incisions from the 4 recent surgeries. He will have it until his follow up with his surgeon on April 15th. We are familiar with wound vacs, but this smaller unit they assigned to Eli would not stop beeping, indicating a leak. There isn't a leak though. They spent hours redoing, testing, reinforcing. It is just a glitchy little wound vac. There are no leaks.  We finally went home at 5 with it beeping.  We deadened the sound with gauze and duck tape when we got home!! And then, while Eli was relaxing in the recliner, it stopped!!! Lol We'll see how long that lasts.

He also has a PICC line for a once a day IV antibiotic. They taught us both how to administer the med, but it is likely Eli can just do this himself. He will have to go once a week to the local clinic have the PICC line cleaned and checked. At those appointments they will also draw blood to monitor his white cell and platelets, not to mention liver function and something else.

We'll see what all Eli is confident doing on his own. He is at 50% weight bearing on his right leg.  As he starts feeling more like himself again (less pain, able to move his leg more) he may be able to drive and possibly even work some during this long 8 week period.  He will have to use the walker, wheelchair, and crutches to get around.

Thanks for checking in and for your prayers. Especially for continued healing and insurance needs.

I am again thankful for the incredible people working at Regions hospital. So helpful,  patient, knowledgeable, and so much more. I am also thankful for my incredible family. Enjoy our latest family photo, taken Sunday as we celebrated Easter with Eli playing a game at the hospital 😊

Happy Easter! He is Risen and is the reason for our hope.
