Edward’s Story

Site created on April 29, 2019

It seems like we never think we'll have a need to update friends and family with difficult news, but here we are.  After intermittently feeling under the weather this winter, Ed had some episodes where he couldn't get solid food to go down, or stay down.  April 3rd he was scheduled for an endoscopy.  The results were concerning, and he was referred to Mayo Clinic for esophageal cancer.   Starting April 15th he has been through multiple CT scans, PET scans, tests, endoscopy, to determine what we are dealing with.  It was determined that the cancer is spreading and is stage IV.  The medical health issues which are listed for him are malignant neoplasm of the esophagus,  of gastroesophageal junction,  secondary malignant neoplasm multiple lymph nodes, and secondary malignant neoplasm lungs.   Because it has spread, Ed isn't a candidate for surgery.  Friday was our first meeting with medical oncology, which is the team who treats cancer with medicine (chemo).  Today was our first meeting with radiation oncology.  There has been nearly a month of tests, waiting for results, and tons of bad news.  Tomorrow we start to fight back.

Journal entry by Barbara Groth

Today we honor the men and women who have died while serving our country.
We have also been spending a lot of time thinking about what we were doing last year at this time.  I can't imagine what the people going through what Ed had to endure with the added burden of all the pandemic issues must feel.  I cannot imagine not being able to be with Ed for his treatments, office visits and procedures.  He was so stressed already, I cannot imagine the added stress he would have had without the added support of his friends and family around to support him. He hated being alone, was scared to be alone, and I cannot imagine how awful it would have been for him when he was in the hospital.  I am so thankful that Ed didn't have to endure that additional stress, and I pray daily for those who have to endure that now.
Ed is at peace, and is dearly missed.
