Edris’s Story

Site created on April 27, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.

On Saturday, April 14th - our parents were in Reno to celebrate mom's 54th birthday.  Within just a few hours of being there, she suffered an asthma/COPD attack and collapsed in the parking garage of their hotel. During the attack, the lack of oxygen triggered cardiac arrest along with aspiration which allowed fluid/matter to enter her lungs.  She has been in the Renown Regional Hospital ICU recovering and undergoing treatment for pneumonia, respiratory/breathing sessions, and monitoring of her heart rate/blood pressure.  Every day has changed the course of her recovery, and the plan of action for the medical staff.  We remain hopeful and pray every day for a miracle.

Journal entry by Krystal Lilly

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted, and I feel guilty for it - but, we’ve all needed to try to focus and prep in our own ways.

Mom has been in a specialty rehab/brain trauma unit in San Jose for about a month. They are a Stanford affiliate, and have been top notch. We were beyond thankful to get her out of that god awful place in Sparks/Reno. It took a lot of fighting, complaints with the facility daily, formal complaints with the state licensing board and Northern NV ombudsman - and, finally... we got her back to CA. The program she is in right now has helped her make large strides, but she is still recovering. They identified a key issue in her ability to recover, and acted on it with orthopedic surgery. She is participating in speech therapy, PT and OT - and, has prosthetic braces arriving next week. Dad and Nic have been there basically every weekend, and Nic and I just started mandatory caregiver training to assist as needed. The basics, if you will. It’s hard - and, I literally look up to those that not only do this for a living but for their loved ones.

As of right now, she has a tentative discharge date of 11/27 to which we will be bringing her home. The next few weeks will be filled with securing a care giver, home health care/nursing, and trying to adjust to all that is life for all of us. Our key goal is giving her what she’s been asking for since the day she came off of sedation... and, that is getting her home.

She is working really hard, but the fact of the matter is that she will still have limitations. For how long, we don’t know... but, thus far she has proven the doctors wrong in that they initially gave her a 3% chance neurologically after reviewing the first set of scans. We said no way! I can’t wait for the day that I get to email her ICU doctor and update him with her progression. (He was hoping for that as well!)

Prayers for Edris would be appreciated, and we know that she is very thankful.
Stay tuned... she’ll be home soon, and will be so happy to start visiting with all of her loved ones, friends, and church family.
