Ed’s Story

Site created on March 12, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.  As you know, Dad was admitted to the hospital on 2/28/19 with likely sepsis. He did indeed have a positive blood culture but over the course of a few days developed severe fluid in his lungs requiring mechanical ventilation. Today we are planning to fly him to Baylor Scott and White - Plano for more advanced care. He has suspected bacterial endocarditis (which is what he self-diagnosed the day of admission). Although he is sedated on the vent,  he is awake often and responds appropriately.  So thankful to his med school friends who have advised us through all of this - especially Rob Fresien who was able to speak  to Dad yesterday and reassure him about the transfer and his care.  He is appropriately fearful and was able to communicate that to us. Please pray for a safe flight out today. Marnie will be driving Mom to Dallas and we will be staying with her brother who lives just a mile from the hospital. Keep sending your thoughts and prayers. We let him know about all of youbwhen he is awake. Just before intubation he requested that we all come up with some good jokes to tell him when he is awake. Marnie’s jokes are getting a little old (why can’t Elsa have a balloon...???) so feel free to share you favorites so we can pass them along.   Thanks again for all your love and support.  We will update as possible.

a brief update…..

All is pretty good.  Ed’s  knee is still painful but will just have to wait for a while before he can have anything done.  He is using both his walker and a cane.  Much more freedom with the cane but less stability.  His weakness due to the length the illness and his foot drop and knee are his major problems.  Everything checked out well today at the cardiologist.  He does have a bit of problem with hypotension if he stands too quickly so having to watch for that.  Also the other night he took a tumble when he took off without his cane and now has a lovely black eye.  I was amazed that with just my help he could finally get up!

I have  finally started my orthopedic journey.  Turns out you can only see the doc for one problem at a time and since I have 10+ pain in my left foot and ankle and the same in my right knee we had to make a decision at Dr. Crossnoe’s on Monday.  The foot and ankle won but not his “thing” so had an MRI and in a week will see Chad Kennedy.  And so it goes…limpy limpy limpy  Ha Ha.

Don’t know what we would do without Hayden to drive us around this month.  Right now transportation is our biggest need.  We are really happy to be home again and it has been fun catching up with friends and family here.   Would love to be on a long cruise if we could just skip the plane, train, car part of the trip and just stay on the boat.
