Dwight’s Story

Site created on February 20, 2023

Thank you to those who have been praying, sending thoughts and well wishes, reaching out, and supporting our family.

My dad received a call late Saturday night (February 18) that there was a liver ready for him; so off to Mayo mom and him went.  They arrived at the clinic about 3:30 AM and dad was wheeled to surgery before 5:30 AM on Sunday morning.

The transplant went very well and nothing unexpected occurred in the surgery itself. While recovering, dad had coagulopathy, meaning he couldn’t form clots, which caused internal bleeding and multiple blood transfusions. He was brought back to the operating room where they were able to “clean him up” and send him back to the ICU. This made a big difference in his appearance and vitals.

The plan for the rest of the evening and overnight was to keep him sedated and intubated to allow his body to rest and avoid adding additional stress.

Journal entry by Chelsea Balamut

Dad and Mom returned home last Wednesday. Since being home dad has started eating more and has gotten out of the house to do a bit of grocery shopping. Last Friday night was a reminder that even though Dad is feeling and looking better he is still recovering from a major surgery. That night he wasn't feeling well and got sick to the point where they had to contact Mayo and potentially make a trip back down. Thankfully that wasn't needed and Dad started feeling better. One thought is that his sickness is a result of a change in some meds. Recovery is a day-by-day process, some days continue to be better (or worse) than others. Dad says he has less energy than he had at Rochester which he thinks is due to adrenaline. Overall, he is less tired than he was pre-surgery. Before the transplant he was very tired and run down and spent a lot of time napping. Even when he has less energy he feels less tired than he did before and hasn't been taking naps like he used to. Thank you for the continued thoughts and prayers! 🥰
