Duncan’s Story

Site created on August 12, 2021

This page will keep folks updated on the removal of a cancerous growth from Duncan's mouth, specifically in his left maxillary area, and his subsequent recovery.

Thankfully, Duncan spotted an abnormality a few weeks ago, went to his dentist and wound up at Duke in no time.  The surgeons have continued to have an optimistic outlook, so we do, too! Nevertheless, the procedure will be long and grueling.

Thanks to everyone for continued love, support and friendship.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Evan McMillan

A medical update below, but before we get to that, I want to share appreciation for all the expected and unexpected ways we have felt supported by so many of you over the past few days (and weeks, and months, and soon to be years…) We have needed it, we are feeling it, and we thank you ❤️

Aunt May took Dunc to his follow appointment with Dr. Kahmke this morning, and at this point we are cautiously optimistic. The flap is viable, but there is a small “defect” on the left side - a slight hole. It may scar over and close, it may remain as is, perhaps it becomes larger. Whatever the case, more time and healing is required before plans for what is next can be hatched.

In less pressing but positive news, Dunc’s neck and arm wounds were relieved of their stitches today, and we set an appointment with the audiologists for early August - his right ear capture noises, his left ear does not.

For the time being more rest, recovery and weight gain are the goals ❤️
