Two and a half years ago I had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in my abdomen. In many ways the surgery was successful and I had a good recovery. I have had CT scans on a regular basis since that time. Several months ago the scan showed that something seemed to be growing again in the area where my previous tumor began. Last week I went to discuss this with a medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering, the cancer center where I had my surgery. The doctor confirmed that it is a liposarcoma, the same cancer I had before.

Now for the good news. This second tumor is small (less than 2") and slow growing. It is contained, which means there is no metastasis, and it is very treatable. At the doctor's recommendation, I will be starting a form of chemotherapy which has been shown to stop or even shrink this type of tumor in a majority of liposarcoma cases. The medication (Ibrance/Palbociclib) is taken as a pill so I won't have to make hospital visits to get it. If, for some reason, the chemotherapy is not successful, I will still have the option of surgery to remove the tumor, so the prognosis is good.

At present, I feel completely fine, although I anticipate some fatigue from the treatment. There are, of course, other potential side effects, which I'll deal with as/if they come.

I'll post again when I begin treatment and check for any messages.
