Newest Update

Journal entry by Allison Andrews

Friends,

My family and I apologize for the delay in an update on my father. It has been a rough go. When life is a roller coaster, it seems more prudent to report the ride when everyone has come to a "full and complete stop," rather than issuing reports that don't reflect the larger picture.

Since Duane has managed to improve in some of the most worrisome areas of concern following his upper femur fracture and hip replacement surgery, we are able to take a breath and reflect. First, your love and attention has been incredibly heartwarming! My mother read a few of your heartfelt expressions to Dad when he had a little stamina to focus. Be assured that he will hear all of what you've written when he's able, and as a family, we are reading your entries every day with full and grateful hearts.

Yesterday, Daddy was moved to Healthsouth after an unhappy dance with insurance! To say that we are relieved would be an understatement. This is tantamount to a promotion we weren't sure he'd ever achieve medically. He has regained the ability to eat and drink, hopefully finished a battle with infection not related to the surgery, and proved himself sufficiently in order to qualify for the work of rehabilitation. Although this recent medical challenge seems to have been "all about the hip," in truth other factors have been much bigger concerns. Now that Duane is improved in those areas, he has an opportunity to continue with full focus on the task of walking, regaining strength, and generally managing himself. Pray he will feel renewed purpose in this next phase, that optimism will creep back into his spirit, and that he won't be able to resist a smile here and there.

The nurses, therapists, techs, sitters and staff on 511 of the Bradley Thompson Tower at CTMFH were the best team of medical providers I've personally witnessed on a single floor in any hospital. (This is not a minor statement coming from a former chaplain resident from Methodist Hospital in Houston and pastoral visitor for the last 30 years),  As  well, the doctors who have known and loved my father these many years demonstrated great concern and love. We can never adequately express our gratitude for all that you poured into my dad.

Although you may want to visit your friend, the policy at Healthsouth does not allow for such. He can only receive one visitor per day at a very specific time. This means even family has to rotate checking on him. Only one of us can be admitted per day.

We feel your prayers and treasure your comments on Caring Bridge and other communication  platforms. Our family will do all that we can to convey your love to Daddy.

Love and blessings from Allison, Susan, and Patty....
