Doug’s Story

Site created on September 24, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On Wednesday, September 11th, Doug was on his house roof, when he slipped on his way back down. In his fall he broke the Thoracic 2 and crushed the Thoracic 3 vertebrae in his back. As a result of these two Vertebrae breaking it pinched his spinal cord. Upon arrival at the hospital via life flight that night, he had no feeling from about his diaphragm down. On Thursday, September 12th, Doug went into a 8 hour surgery where they removed the "T2" and T3" vertebrae, built a cage around that area letting the spinal cord move freely, fused the vertebrae in his back starting at the cervical vertebrae "C2" thru "T6". He also acquired some hardware of a rod and pins in his back to help support his spine.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jenn VanHouse

Just a quick update- 1 1/2 weeks home and everything is going good so far.  My dad will be taking a Break from PT in Duluth for a few weeks due to the COVID 19- as he told us- he does NOT want to have to go back to the hospital unless it’s to visit. No need to get any lung infections, that ventalator is hopefully a thing of the past. They did set some goals today at PT so he will have something to work towards these next few weeks.
