Doug’s Story

Site created on January 17, 2024

In mid-December 2023, Doug fell while working in the pole barn. A few days later, he visited the doctor to address neck swelling he suspected was related to the fall. A biopsy at the end of December 2023 indicated Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma. Doug immediately transferred care to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where the doctors confirmed his diagnosis as Stage 3/4 Double-Hit Large B-Cell Lymphoma in January 2024.

"Double-hit" means that there are mutations in the cells that make it a rare and particularly aggressive form of cancer. It has spread to lymph nodes both above and below the diaphragm. To treat the cancer he will be receiving R-CODOX-M-IVAC protocol. It is an intense chemo regimen, organized into a 21 day cycle. He will be in the hospital for approximately 10 days every cycle and visiting the hospital for outpatient visits on the remaining days of the cycle. He started his first chemotherapy treatment on January 16, 2024. Doug and his wife, Laurie, will be staying in Rochester for 4-6 months while Doug has chemo treatment.

Thankfully, Doug has many positives going into treatment. He is feeling well and has been very active, including hunting with his dog, Ranger - up until treatment started. His blood tests are also normal. The doctors are amazed by Doug's positive attitude and desire to face this head on. He was eager to get started with chemotherapy and has repeatedly told the doctors to "keep it coming" despite the side effects. He has decided on the motivational phrase: Positivity, Patience, and Trust - both in the Lord and the doctors at Mayo.

His wife, Laurie, and his daughter, Kayla, are both in Rochester and will be sharing updates on this page.

We appreciate the outpouring of love and support Doug has received. Sincerely - Doug, Laurie, Kayla, Kyle & family

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kayla Gross

Hi all -

Kayla here. It has been an exciting week! Dad's blood counts continued to rise and on Thursday he rang the bell in the "LC" unit of Mayo, the outpatient cancer wing. This signifies that he is done with outpatient visits and his PICC line has been removed!!

I've included the video of ringing the bell in the LC, another emotional and special moment for all.

As his numbers are up, he's also able to go in public! He's enjoyed walking through Scheel's, Menards (my list of diy projects for him is growing by the day LOL), and eating out at restaurants. I've attached photos of him eating out at Forager Brewing and practicing his shooting at the arcade in Scheel's.

It will take some time for his stamina and strength to return. Outings still take quite a bit out of him. We meet with physical therapy on Thursday to discuss rehab.

Thank you all for the continued support! Please keep sending all of your positive vibes for a CLEAN PET SCAN on the 7th! That's our last hurdle before heading home to the lake!
