This spring, after experiencing some increasingly difficult health struggles, our mom, Dorothy Thompson, was diagnosed with cancer.
Initially, we learned that there were masses in her lung and kidney. A few weeks later, the scan preceding her biopsy revealed that the cancer was very aggressive and it had spread. More testing was required to determine the plan going forward.
She has been diagnosed with stage IV small cell carcinoma of the lung. She will begin palliative chemotherapy treatments next Friday if everything goes well with her blood work this week and she is strong enough to begin. She has been rather weak lately but is determined to give chemo a try. These treatments will help her to breathe better.
At this time, a cure is not possible but she wants to remain with us for as long as she is able.
Many people have asked how they can help. Right now, mom is enjoying spending time with friends and family. These visits have really lifted her spirits, all things considering, and she is ready to face what is ahead of her. If you are able, share some memories with her in a visit, a phone call or a letter.
She's so grateful for the support that she has already received, as are we! As needs arise we may look to our community for additional support.
We are using this CaringBridge website to keep family and friends updated in one place. Please note that this information is intentionally given to help alleviate the stress of having to repeat the story over and over again, which has been physically and emotionally exhausting for her. As we learn new information or have any special needs or requests, we will add it all here as we are able. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.
Thank you for visiting.
