Donna’s Story

Welcome to Mom's CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.

My mom, Donna, was diagnosed with heart failure almost 12 years, I believe, and lung cancer 5 years ago when I was away for college. I moved back to the area to be closer to and with her while she fought cancer. Between her diagnosis and recently, she had been fighting as hard as she can to stay here with us. Mom has gotten 2/3 of her right lung removed and completed one full round of IV chemo. This summer, her doctors had explained that her cancer is moving to other parts besides her lungs, it was expressing itself in her lymph nodes at this time. Along with her expansion of the cancer, also broke her the news of her terminal illness life expectancy was estimated at most of 2 years. This news took a tole on her but she remained positive.

With this expressed positivity, she decided to try a pill form of chemo this time. She immediately showed side effects, at this time they decreased her dosage and frequencies in taking them.

Starting in November of 2023, Mom was in and out of the emergency room for reasons they had just explained as side effects of the chemo. She was miserable over the holidays but waited patiently to go into the hospital the day after Christmas. She has been in the hospital since, besides last weekend she was discharged but back in the administration process of things, after expressing that she wanted to be at the hospital. When she was first hospitalized, she ended up being intubated for 2 days for inflammation and blood in her lungs. After getting the tube out, she was moved to another part of the hospital where she experienced extreme stomach pain, liver labs were elevated and they were also concerned about her gullbladder at this time.
After being hospitalized this time of round, she tested positive for Influenza, and shortly afterwards ended up having pulmonary edema, liquid in the lungs.

She recently is showing testing and cognitive indications of liver failure, which is the main concern.

The doctors are currently only treating for comfort care.
