Don’s Story

Site created on May 5, 2021

Hello everyone! I thought this site would be an easier way to keep everyone updated on my dad's condition rather than using Facebook, since a lot of his friends aren't on social media.

Most everyone probably knows that back in February, my dad fell and broke his leg. He had surgery and spent two and a half months in rehab, then came back to his apartment on a Wednesday. The next Saturday, he lost his balance while sitting down and his head hit the wall behind him, causing a subdural hematoma. He had a right frontal partial craniotomy to relieve the pressure but is now dealing with a difficult recovery and some other issues.

Journal entry by Sarah Garner

Well, friends, the day I made my way to the hospital with a suitcase of real clothes for my dad, the hospital called and said there would be a delay for him to move into rehab.

Why, you ask?

Well. Last February my dad had the First Shot. Five days later he tested positive, and fell four days after that. He was asymptomatic the whole time, but was still quarantined at the hospital and in his outpatient rehab.

While in rehab, he received the Second Shot.

Then, a week and a half ago, they tested him while they were getting him ready to move and he had it. Again.

Asymptomatic both times. Both shots. COPD, pulmonary edema, and he developed Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or Broken Heart Syndrome, though his was from the stress of the injury and not from emotional loss.

I digress. All that to say at his age, with his health issues, it was crazy strange that he had covid twice and stayed healthy. So healthy that he is really confused and doesn’t seem to understand he’d had the virus twice. He never knew he had it.

After exhausting run-arounds from warring departments, he finally moved today.

Four hours of therapy a day. 2 hrs OT, 1 hr PT, and 1 hr speech therapy.

I’m sure he’ll take a nap tomorrow!
