Don’s Story

Site created on November 17, 2018

To bring everyone up to speed, Don suffered a seizure  on Thursday morning at Southpoint after visiting Barnes & Noble with Carla. He was taken by ambulance to UNC Hospital. The doctors in the ER performed a CT scan and found a mass in his left hemisphere. He was moved to the NSICU where he was monitored. Once it was apparent that he was stable, he was given an MRI that showed he had two lesions of an undetermined type of cancer. Don was then brought out from under sedation and was conscience and communicating. At this point, it was decided that the neurosurgical team at Duke was the best place for Don. He was moved to Duke early Saturday morning and met with his doctor.

We would like to thank everyone at Southpoint who rushed to help Don and Carla. From the off duty EMT, who immediately jumped in to provide care, to the gentleman who went to his car and brought a blanket to keep Don warm. It certainly reminded us that there are still many among us who are willing to help strangers in need.  The care from the EMTs and ER team at UNC was excellent, as was the NSICU team. Don is now in the hands of possibly the best team in the world for neurosurgery. We are thankful to everyone who helped us while we were at UNC and made the transition to Duke so easy. The advice of our friends in the medical community has been invaluable.  We are so thankful for all of the thoughts and prayers we have received thus far. It warms our hearts to know that we have such great friends and family.  Thank you to everyone who has reached out, we great appreciate all of your love and support. Don is such a special person that has touched the lives of many people and I know that we all are praying for his recovery.

Journal entry by Fancy Hogan

Don came home late afternoon yesterday. He was very happy to be home and in his own bed. It is pretty amazing that he was discharged a little more than 24 hours after surgery, but his surgeon has found that as he reduced the hospital stays for his patients, the results were better.

Thank you again for all your love and support. It has meant so much to the family.
