Dixie’s Story

Site created on May 14, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

After a months-long respiratory issue that  began in January and confounded her physicians, Dixie was recently diagnosed with neck and throat cancer.  This was a shock, as you can imagine; she is now processing this with the support of her extraordinary family and loving  friends.  She is currently in the midst of meetings, appointments, and further testing to determine the best course of treatment.  Once a few questions are answered, she will likely begin intense chemo and radiation treatment in the  first week of June. The treatments will be 5 days a week for 7 weeks.  Dixie, Bob, and her family are grateful for the all support and encouragement she is receiving.

There is a MealTrain link in the “Ways to Help” tab if you’re able to support Dixie and Bob with a dinner during her treatment.

Journal entry by Dixie Samuels

Hello Friends and Family,

I’m passing on an important post from Bob in case you haven’t received it on Facebook (which is where Bob posts his entries).

Here is Bob’s post:

The last time I posted here, on January 17th, I said I was on  two new meds, one for leukemia and one for platelets. The platelet booster quickly pushed the count up past mid-normal range. Yay! However, so far, no benefits seen from the new leukemia med.

I also mentioned respiratory issues.

Those continued to worsen and now I’m in the hospital with “multi-focal” (widespread) pneumonia in my lungs. I’m literally gasping for breath with the slightest exertion…a horrible feeling. I’ve been put on an antibiotic that has worked very well for me in past encounters with pneumonia, and we’re hopeful that it will work as well this time around. Dixie has been her steadfast, loving self, waiting on me hand and foot. She slept on the daybed in my room last night and wants to again tonight. Bless her heart!!

At this point, I’m having to postpone the “Swim My Age” launch as well as the swim itself, but am looking forward to getting it under way as soon as I get some energy back.

Thank you each and all for your beautiful and heartfelt messages. I love hearing from you and you boost my spirits!

Love,
Bob
