Journal entry by Matt Schiebout

Hey All. Life’s been a bit of a blur this last week. Lots going on with Dirks Journey.  All good stuff, it’s hard for us to keep up. Got a nice long text from Amy today giving us a rundown of the goings on. So hear it is from the boss lady herself!

Here’s a brief rundown. We came back to Omaha Monday afternoon, went to a movie for his birthday and stayed at Hope Lodge that night.

Tuesday morning was labs and education. 3pm they started fluids and had him start eating ice chips and popsicles. Around 4 they administered the super duper chemo and then admitted him and brought him up to his room.

Wednesday they started up with more fluids around 10am and started with the process of thawing out his stem cells. Started administering the cells (4bags worth) around 3 and was done around 4. They told us that we would be able to tell they are reentering by a distinctive smell…creamed corn!! I could start to smell it last night but when I walked into his room this morning, it was like he had a crockpot boiling on high in his room and the smell just slapped me across the face. Wowza! So weird!! He was able to sleep in this morning and he’s been sleeping since I got here around noon, so he doesn’t even know I’m here yet! We’ll probably walk around again later.

We were given a challenge (uh oh 🙄) to walk a marathon while he’s at the hospital. So between Tuesday night when he was admitted up through last night, he already walked 5 miles!! This morning he walked another mile. Woot Woot!!

But he will be in the hospital for approximately 2 weeks, just depends on what milestones are achieved in his bloodwork. Once he hits that, he will be released to stay in Hope Lodge til the next milestone. Then after that he can go home with checkups. Not sure how often we need to come back yet. They say after the chemo he just had, day 5-10 will be the worst and then get better after that. So tonight we’ll be 2 days in. Praying for a good weekend and a great next week. Praying for a coating or sheath, to cover/protect him from his mouth all the way down through his booty. Praying symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sores will be nonexistent or hardly at all. Also praying for a great mindset, and that I can be the best support person he needs. Thank you for checking in and praying for us. It means so much. ❤️

Thanks for all your support! Much love to you all!
