Richard “Dick” Holmberg is now with his Lord and Savior. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving Family on the 14th of November of complications from multiple strokes suffered in January of this year.

Dick was born in Bay Shore, New York on August 6, 1938.   Dick graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from Clarkson University. He had countless friends as an ROTC cadet and a brother in the Delta Upsilon fraternity.  He played for the Clarkson Golden Knights Ice Hockey Team and Captained the University’s Lacrosse team.

Dick served five (5) years as a US Army aviator. He flew in the Viet Nam war and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor in Combat and was awarded the Air Medal seven (7) times.

After his military service Dick joined IBM Corp. as a sales representative, earning the 100% Club and Golden Circle recognition often. He moved his family from Vestal, NY to Boulder, CO in 1986 to join the IBM Printer Products Briefing Center team. Dick retired from IBM in 1993.

He lived a life full of purpose. He was a dedicated youth leader in his community.  He spent several summers guiding Boy Scouts through the Adirondack mountain lakes by canoe. Dick was an early leader of youth ice hockey in upstate New York, coaching several house and travel teams as well as leading his Vestal High School club hockey team to four consecutive championships.  Dick helped to found the Broome County High School Ice Hockey Organization and the amateur ice hockey officials organization of the Southern Tier of NY.  Dick officiated for the Eastern College Athletic Association refereeing many Cornell University ice hockey games at Lynah Rink and skated as a Linesman for the North American Hockey League in the Broome County Veteran’s Memorial Arena.

He was an avid bicyclist and rode his bicycle several thousand miles a year in Colorado. Most recently with the S.O.B.s (Seniors on Bikes), an amazing group of caring and fun athletes. He rode 30 plus miles the day before his stroke.

Dick was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving recently as a Webelos Boy Scout Leader and as an home teacher.

As a member of the Boulder Rifle Club he taught gun safety and other courses through his NRA instructor certifications.

Dick was always quick with a smile and a sincere offer to help.  He would stop to fix flat tires, broken chains and any other mishap riders encountered.
