Newest Update

Journal entry by Diana Wilmot

As I sit here waiting for my very last Immunotherapy (number 17 over the last year), I can't help but reflect on the last two years of cancer treatments....chemo, surgery, radiation, oral chemo, immunotherapy, etc..  The nurses at UCSF have been incredible. Some are more skilled than others at poking me with the IV for the drip, but they are all just so committed to their work and so kind.  I had my last visit with Dr. Hope Rugo, who is a true superhero.  I feel so grateful to be under her care.  My mammogram from today included quite a lot of twisting and turning, but in the end I got a clean bill of health, so they can put me in whatever contortionist position they'd like, so long as they can continue to tell me I am cancer free!  I will continue to scan for the next five years - Chest Scan this December.  MRI in March, and continuing on from there.  I am just so appreciative of UCSF and their staff.  In the last two visits, I have also had the "Lipstick Angels" come by and ask me if I want a hand massage (hell yes!), an eyebrow tutorial and fill in (sure, why not!) and some lipstick to take home (yup!).  What amazing service to be able to reduce stress and help cancer patients feel more like themselves.  UCSF is just top notch!

Finishing out the year (Jewish year) with this last treatment fills me with hope for renewal and for the future.  There is a lot to be done to wrap up 2022, but knowing that I'm starting fresh in 5783 feels pretty damn good.  For everyone who has kept up on this journey, thank you!  I am grateful for each of you and feel so fortunate to have friends and family in my life that care and reach out.  As you all know, I am definitely a "go getter," and while this triple negative breast cancer diagnosis knocked me down for a short while, it wasn't long in the grand scheme of things.  I am back on the Peloton, half way through a six-week challenge of three rides a week, working towards regaining strength and cardio fitness.  I am helping to organize my high school's 30th reunion, which will be held in two weeks, and I've joined the singing group at my synagogue.

Now I will go find myself a mikvah and rejoice in the transition to celebrate the end of this journey.  For those who may be ill or praying for others who are ill, I will continue to pray for you to find the strength, the courage, and the will to continue to fight whatever confronts you.  May you all have a sweet and healthy new year.  Shana Tova U'Metukah.

Love,

Diana
