Derrick’s Story

Site created on August 3, 2021

On Sunday July, 25th (1am) Alyssa took Derrick to the ER for stomach pain. Sunday morning they went in and removed his gallbladder. However the doctor nicked his intestine and wasn't aware of it. He was leaking bowl into his stomach. Monday morning he went into surgery again to fix the leak. However, they were fixing the wrong issue. Tuesday the 27th they took Derrick by ambulance to Fargo, he went into emergency surgery to put 2 stints in. As he was in recovery the doctor came said he needed to go back into surgery or he will die. After that he had had 7 surgeries in 10 days. His stomach is wide open, and won't be able to close for a few weeks.

Journal entry by Michele Cariveau

So Derrick moved to a new room yesterday.  It went well.  He is able to wet his mouth with a sponge in water.   However today they let him dunk it in his Hawaiian fruit punch.  He said it tasted "soo good".  Yesterday he showed Alyssa and I that he stood up and walked in place.  Today he was walking to the bathroom.   He truly is a miracle and God has answered our prayers.   He still has a ways to go but strides forward any size we will take.
Tomorrow's goal is that he can walk to the door and maybe even out in the hall.  We'll see if he can do it.  He is positive and quite strong for how long he laid in a bed.  Please keep praying for strength and recovery.   Love you all.
