Journal entry by Lacey Lemke —
The good news is Derek’s labs are remarkable!
Derek’s MRI revealed a complication from chronic pancreatitis- a stricture in a duct within the tail of his pancreas. This explains the increased frequency of pain and abdominal pressure.
The lead physician recommends yearly monitoring unless symptoms become unmanageable. We have a follow up procedure scheduled for next year to get a better view of Derek’s pancreas when we return. For now we shift our focus back to ‘daily operations’ - pain management, increase antioxidant rich foods, dietary adjustments and begin supplement regiment.
We are very pleased with the expertise of the lead physician, the compassion and reassurance of the nurse practitioner and the efficiency of the clinic.
Derek is the definition of strength. He would never admit to it but all who face chronic illness should get the pleasure of witnessing how he navigates stress and discomfort.
We hope that whomever is working to advance gene therapy, specifically targeting pancreatic dysfunction, would know that it would change our lives and to dig deeper for us!
Thank you for the encouragement and prayers throughout this journey. Besides some traffic delays the drive home was smooth sailing. Elliot was an angel! We are happy to be home safe and earlier than anticipated.
Merry Christmas from your family to yours! Xo.
