Deon’s Story

Site created on September 9, 2019

This August, Deon Haywood was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. She is undertaking this fight, in the words of the late Audre Lorde, as “an act of political warfare.” And asks us all to be there with her –– learning, growing, sharing, and fighting at her side.

Beating breast cancer for a second time will be an emotional, physical, and spiritual process that far exceeds the care that doctors can provide. We are establishing this fundraiser, so that when the treatments get tough, Deon is able to invest in the essential self-care that insurance rarely covers: nutritious meals, supplements, acupuncture, massage therapy, etc. Fuck cancer. We love you, Deon!

Thank you to everyone for all of your support thus far. In honor of Deon, the Women with a Vision Team will be participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in New Orleans next Saturday, October 11.

According to the CDC, deaths from breast cancer are going down among both black and white women, especially among younger black women. But breast cancer death rates are 40% higher among black women than white women.

Please consider joining our team or supporting our fundraising for the American Cancer Society to continue to advance the fight against breast cancer across the country.
