Declan’s Story

Site created on April 1, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting. On Tuesday, March 24 we found a lump on Declan's side while changing him. The Pediatrician sent us to Children's and imaging confirmed our worst fears. Declan was diagnosed with Wilms' Tumors. He has a large mass on his right kidney and two smaller masses on his left. This particular cancer is malignant but also responds well to Chemotherapy. Declan will receive a port on Thursday, April 2 and begin chemo in efforts to shrink these tumors so that their remnants can be surgically removed. He will undergo 6 weeks of chemo at a time, followed by imaging to monitor the size of the tumors. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we begin to fight for the life of our 7.5 month old baby boy.

Journal entry by Heather Lowery

The words "your child has cancer" are some of the worst words a parent could hear. Hearing, "he may have relapsed" are just as terrifying.

At the end of June, we noticed a lump on Declan's belly near his old incision. Not thinking much about it, we took him to the pediatrician more because he had a bug bite that left him looking like cromagnum man than concern for a relapse. After an ultrasound and follow up CT/MRI, we were told that whatever the lump was, needed to be removed.

This past Tuesday, Declan had the mass surgically removed. The surgeon told us the tissue looked suspicious but that the pathology report would take some time to come back. We were devastated all over again thinking of the nightmare that began last year and fearing the worst.

By the grace of God and what we attribute to all of your prayers, we were told that the final pathology report revealed that Declan is not relapsing. The growth they removed is treated by excision (surgical removal) and surveillance (which we are already doing post Wilms). Our baby is still in the clear, for now, and will still ring the bell for end of treatment on August 13.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your continued prayers and well wishes. When they say it takes a village, they weren't lying. We are eternally grateful for ours.
