Declan’s Story

Site created on May 18, 2024

Dear friends and family,

Welcome to the CaringBridge website for Declan. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement so much and ask that you add your words of encouragement here in lieu of texts, calls and emails at this time.

Declan is 8 yrs old and has Down Syndrome. He is funny, always has a twinkle in his eye; he is passionate about music and likes to drum on literally everything. Declan is a joy and a delight to everyone he meets.

Currently, he is in the hospital at UVA In Charlottesville, VA. Declan has been diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome which affects his kidneys. There’s no treatment for HUS. His body has to work the toxin out on its own and his kidneys need to stay strong. He is in A LOT of pain and on supplemental oxygen. All care will be supportive as they wait this out - fluids, pain meds, platelet transfusions, dialysis (if needed).

Please pray with us for his complete healing, for my brother and sister-in-law, Tim & Jonelle, and for Declan’s older sister, Addie. We are so grateful for your thoughts and prayers. What an incredible community Declan has right now all over the country supporting him. ❤️

Journal entry by Jenni Bounds

We’ve been home for 9 days now and are finding a routine. Declan is recovering. He tires more easily than he used to, which is to be expected as his body works to heal. We had a follow up appointment yesterday with Declan’s kidney doctor and he had blood work done. His labs show that his kidneys are functioning and still have a ways to go - hopefully only 3 months. That’s standard for acute kidney damage. Declan’s diet will change to help bring some of his numbers into balance, and he’ll have a steady flow of strawberry lemonade and water to help clear the debris from his body. We’ll also continue a weekly check of his blood pressure.

We will follow up with Dr. E monthly through this season of repair.

It truly is amazing how God has designed the body to compensate for trauma and to heal itself after such a severe shutdown of vital organs.

Jonelle and I continue to be very thankful for all of the encouragement that many of you have sent our way in many different forms. And most of all we are thankful for the mercy of God who has granted us more days with our son. And for that we are grateful.
