Journal entry by Valerie Coplien

Last week was his last week of consolidation. We thought it was going to be a pretty quick appointment with only needing a quick 5 minute chemo. But blood work took a long time to come back and I was concerned his platelets were still low because he had lots of bruising and little red dots on his arms and back. His platelets came back at 18 so since we were there they wanted to give him another platelet transfusion. Of course he was already deaccessed so he had to be reaccessed again which was probably the worst part of the appointment. We ended up being there for about 4 1/2 hours. This week he has been more tired and taking more naps which we expected as that is normally what happens when his counts are low. We were able to get away to the lake house this weekend and enjoy the nice weather with lots of outside time. Declan had a blood draw this morning to check and see if he made counts to start his next phase of treatment interm maintenance 1. He didn’t make counts. His neutrophils were the lowest they have been at 60. They need to be 750 to start IM1. We are expecting a couple to week delay again like we had in the middle of consolidation. However, we have baseball tickets to go to the Cubs vs Brewers game on 5/4. Tickets were bought as Christmas presents prior to diagnosis. IM1 will start 3-4 day inpatient stays at the hospital every other week for 8 weeks. So even if he were to make counts to start treatment again on 4/30, his doctors are ok to delay another week so he can go to the game. He has really been looking forward to it as he is the only cubs fan in a house of brewer fans. So right now we are planning he will likely start IM1 on 5/7 unless something crash happens and his counts make a quick turnaround by next week. Unfortunately with his counts being so low he hasn’t been able to go to school at all so he has been doing some work at the shop with dad and staying home with me while I work a couple days a week. Thank you for all the continued prayers and thoughts.
