Debbie’s Story

Site created on February 1, 2020

On January 31st Debbie was on her way to Uganda for a mission trip when she landed in Frankfurt, Germany and was rushed into an emergency craniectomy to relieve pressure caused by a brain bleed. We are using this site to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.

What a year. On this day in 2020 we were scrambling to make travel plans to get to Germany after learning mom had suffered a brain bleed and emergency craniectomy in Frankfurt. We were given no prognosis or idea of what to expect except that a road to recovery would be long and arduous — if she even woke up.

Today, we had lunch as a family and shared a few memories from this journey. We are so thankful to all of mom’s medical teams - doctors, nurses, techs, therapists, case managers - friends and family in our communities all over the country. It’s hard to imagine how much love can be felt in a time of a pandemic when there is not a lot of contact, but the support was overwhelming in the very best way.

Mom is continuing her therapies and we are still taking it one day at a time, but we are thankful and proud of the progress she’s made. We are very hopeful for more improvements as we try to get back to some “normal” activities. We still find comfort in knowing that none of this was a surprise to God - leaning into Psalm 139 - “He hems me in, before and behind.”

Thank you for all your love, prayers, support, meals, cards and ongoing encouragement. We could never say it enough!
