My mom’s mom Romelda has gone to be with my mom. I’m so grateful she was able to come to my wedding just a month ago to give a blessing and to help button up my reception dress as I put it on just like she did for my mom when my mom wore the same dress to her own wedding.

My grandma had hip surgery after a fall and break. A few days later her body started to shut down and she was adamant about not wanting to go back to the hospital. She told everyone she was ready to open her eyes to heaven. She was at peace and had such clarity.

I can’t help but believe that when she did open her eyes to the eternal light that my mom, her beloved sister Lila, her brothers, and countless friends were there eager as ever to catch up over cookies and coffee just like they did when they were here on Earth.

One week ago family and friends gathered in Moorhead, MN to share stories about Grandma Romelda. It’s no doubt that my mom’s servant heart came from her mom. When it was time for Kayla to share a few memories she did so with Jackson & Soren in either arm. A few days earlier when Kayla got the news Grandma had passed the twins went to her just like she’s done for them so many times to console an owie or sadness. When they asked why she was sad she told them she had an owie in her heart. But before even asking they both knew it was their turn to give their mom a consoling hug. And they did so in that moment and after running up to her while she shared her memories at the service. They too have inherited my mom and grandmother’s compassion.

A beautiful funeral was held last Saturday with a packed house, lots of love, and an epic midwestern luncheon. We are so grateful for the love shared both in person and from afar. And we know that just like with my mom, my grandma’s memory will live on in the lives of those she touched.

I’m so glad to still have the voicemails from my grandma from this past year. I’ve compiled them into this 8 min recording because her voice was one of those I don’t ever want to forget.

Sending hugs and voicemail joys to all of you,
Kathryn
