Dawn’s Story

Site created on November 19, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Dawn was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer, a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer, in October 2018. Due to her insurance coverage as an independent contractor, she has been forced to do the majority of her treatments in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It's a bit of a challenge with Dawn's role as an at-home daycare provider to find the time and means to take the time she needs away from her job. But our family has been committed to making it work!

All support is great support, whether its words of encouragement, a few dollars or simply letting Dawn know you're a part of her army of support.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Megan Gloss

Today, Mom and I met with her oncologist at Physicians Clinic of Iowa in Cedar Rapids to learn the results of her recent scans.

We were so happy that my brother Logan and sister-in-law Tracey were able to drive in from the Sioux City area to be there with us!

The results:

Bone: Negative.
Heart: Negative.
Liver: Negative.
Kidneys: Negative.
Brain: Negative.

Such excellent news!

The one question mark that remains is her lungs, which show a few spots that could be attributed to what her oncologist referred to as “Iowa lung” from the various allergens we have floating around here. However, she couldn’t rule out cancer just yet, so after much frustrating back and forth from Mom’s insurance provider, she finally will have her PET scan to determine this.

She also finally has been scheduled to begin her treatment. She’ll have her first chemotherapy session on Friday, Dec. 7, in Cedar Rapids. She’ll have 20 rounds of chemo, followed by a mastectomy, radiation and reconstruction.

Wanna know how you can help? We still have Mom’s GoFundMePage, where you can make a contribution. She is in need of financial support, as her insurance only goes so far to cover what she needs.

The other thing: Meals! If anyone has a knack for a healthy dish or two that feeds 2-3 and freezes and would be interested in donating, it will alleviate one small thing from her plate so she can reserve her energy.

Please feel free to drop a note here if you’d be interested in contributing a meal.
