David’s Story

Site created on August 25, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website for David McKay, who is hospitalized and recovering from a significant stroke. This site is being run by those close to David. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.   Please note that it is easy to accidentally contribute to the Caring Bridge organization.  If you want to donate to support David and Buddy, please click on the WAYS TO HELP tab in the purple bar just above the title "David's Story."

David and his partner, Buddy, have asked that anyone wishing to know how David is doing, who wants to help, or who wants to send good wishes do so through this website.  At this time, they would rather not have a lot of folks reaching out to them directly and David does not want visitors right now.  Please respect their wishes and use this site to send good thoughts, to get updates, and to find ways to help them out.  We will post updates once a week on how things are going.

David's recovery will take some time, and donations to cover medical expenses and lost income will be helpful over the next few months.  In the coming months, help with chores, meals, and errands also will be needed and will be added to the site when that time comes.

David is an integral part of the Brooklyn College community as a professor and as director of the LGBTQ Resource Center, and is a beloved partner, uncle, mentor, and friend. He has spent his career at Brooklyn College helping students, faculty, and staff, and making important strides for the LGBTQ community on campus. If you're one of the many people who have been impacted by David, we ask that you give back in whatever way you can. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Suzanne Button

Hello to all David McKay supporters!  It's official....David is coming home from the rehab unit this Sunday, September 29th.  He will have a few weeks of at home therapies and we are so happy he will finally be able to continue to get better in his own home.  David and Buddy would like just a few days to allow the dust to settle before they get others involved, but they both agree that they will need some help.  There will be opportunity to help around the house if you are a cleaner, do some shopping if you are a shopper, and possibly even come keep David company for a few hours.  Keep your eyes on the planner next week, we will start populating that and asking for specific supports soon.

Many thanks for the donations (which are very needed right now) and the well wishes. David and Buddy are showing such determination in a challenging time, and your support of them means so much.
