From the City of Auburn”Each Memorial Day, we take the opportunity to recognize two veterans who served our nation with honor. 🎖️ This year was no different.
Our guest of honor at this morning's Memorial Day Breakfast and the recipient of this year's Distinguished Veteran Award was Marine Corps Sergeant Eugene Stanaland.
Stanaland served at Paris Island from 1953 to 1956 and went on to become a longtime Auburn University economics professor, Auburn City Council president and highly sought-after speaker. Stanaland and his wife Phyllis still call Auburn home today.
The 2024 Heroes Remembered Award was presented to the family of Marine Corps Major David Stafford Miller.
Miller spent 13 years in the military, serving his final post as a member of Marine Helicopter Squadron One. His love of flying lead him to a 29-year career with American Airlines before he returned to his hometown of Auburn to teach in Auburn University's School of Aviation.
Today, we honor Sergeant Stanaland and Major Miller for their dedication and service alongside all of our nation's veterans. 🇺🇸”
