David’s Story

Site created on January 15, 2024

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Here is how we got here.

David was diagnosed in 2019 with Dementia/Alzheimer's. Since then, he has had a slow decline in memory and cognitive function. This summer, after another episode with his Gallbladder having issues, we were finally able to find a facility that would be able to remove it. Unfortunately, this was around the time that Carmen was no longer able to support his needs in the home, and a couple of weeks after his GB surgery on August 10th, 2023, he was placed into a memory care facility in Hastings, MN where David has been living in a studio type apartment with assisted living.

On January 1st, we were notified by the memory care facility that David had an episode where his movements were jerky and shaky, and he was having balance issues. He was taken by ambulance to the emergency room, where it was speculated he was having seizures, and immediately transferred to United Hospital in St. Paul for further testing and diagnosis.

After much testing, it was confirmed that he was having Dementia seizures, and he began EEG monitoring, along with IV seizure medications. He stayed in that unit for about a week and, unfortunately, became fidgety and not compliant with taking his oral meds.

Wednesday, January 10th, he was transferred to the geriatric psych unit to help him find the right combination of medication to help with his anxiety & moods, seizure medications, and all of the other medications he is on.

On January 12th, he was celebrated by staff for his birthday, but he didn't really understand what all of the attention was for.

Today, January 15th, we have met with Palliative care and have been advised that, most likely, we will be moving him into a facility that can support him with Hospice.  Dementia runs on its own timeline, so none of us really know what's next. Regardless, his time on Earth is drawing to a close.

We will use this forum to keep everyone updated. Prayers are welcomed for our family and his peace.
