Dave: Well as I said in the last post Dave was supposed to get his trach out on March 29th. In true Menn fashion neither of my parents wait until the deadline, they are always ahead of the game. This morning Teri went to suction the trach like normal and she couldn’t get the suction tool into the trach which indicated that there was some sort of blockage in Dave’s throat. She put a call in to the nurse who told her to take him to the ER. They headed to the Metro ER. Turns out he had another bad mucus build up that was causing the blockage. The doctor was able to get the blockage out which I heard was not pleasant. Then they had to give him lidocaine so that the doctor could use the camera to see how his vocal cords looked from his surgery. After further evaluation and consulting the surgeon the doctors decided it was in Dave’s best interest to remove the trach since everything looked good! He came home with no trach and a bandage over the hole in his throat which should close on its own in 3-4 days. He is still on a soft food diet until the stitches in his throat dissolve. Dave was very happy to finally get the trach out! Now it’s back to physical therapy to get stronger! Here is a picture of Dave today as he waited to get discharged from the hospital.
