Dave’s Story

Site created on June 3, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

We’re writing this to thank you in advance for your prayers and concerns, and to explain why Dave won’t be able to talk with you for a while.

On Wednesday, June 7, Dave is undergoing throat surgery - tonsillectomy with the excision of an elongated styloid process. Known often as Eagle Syndrome. It is easier to look it up than explain it. While Dave is under anesthesia the surgeon plans to also examine his throat - from the inside. She did not explain any reason for this, and we understand it is for preventive reasons.

The surgeon informed Dave that he will be miserable and very sore for several days after surgery, and definitely will not be talking. That, it self, will contribute to his being miserable. The expectation is seven to 10 days of pain (elder folk recover more slowly, Dr. Gendron explained).

If you want to “chat” with Dave do it by text or email. When he is able, he will send messages. Rosanne is available to talk with you, or you can email her as well.

When all this is done, we expect that the chronic sore ears, sore throat, upper chest irritation, maybe tinnitus, and other conditions will be improved. Dave is mostly concerned that he is healthy enough to lead Summer Senate in Mid-July, and hopeful his voice will improve for the fall choir season.

Journal entry by Dave Racer

It's been six weeks on Wednesday since the throat surgery. My surgeon said heling time would be 3-6 weeks. I have regained probably 95% of my normal voice, and this past Sunday, sang most worship songs, and worked in some high range vocals - but has a sore throat on Monday. In other words, we're getting there.

It has been just over three months since my back surgery (decompression) and unfortunately, the idle time and a bit of fatuque from the throat surgery has set me back a tad. More leg and nerve pain than I had hoped. This will take time to heal, and a good deal more walking and exercising. Soon enough.

Thank you for prayers. And love.
